Grab A Towel

I have an aversion to feet.

There I said it. Baby feet I can tolerate….barely….sorry.baby-feet

Interesting what a towel can do when it comes to feet…..

John 13:3-8 “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his out clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord are you going to wash my feet?’ and Jesus replied ‘You do not realize what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ ‘No’, said Peter, ‘you shall never wash my feet’ Jesus answered, ‘unless I was you, you will have no part of me.'”

These were grimy, dirty, walk many miles in the mud and no telling what else, men feet. And our Jesus actually washed them!! The King of Kings and Lord of Lords washed his disciples’ feet!!

I bet the silence around that table was deafening as they all sat there with shock on their face! Then Peter said what they all were probably thinking.

John 13_3-8

Years ago my grandma’s husband was very ill. He was in the hospital and not thinking straight at all. I went up to visit with he and my grandmother and arrived at a late hour. I watched as my grandmother lovingly take his right foot in her hand, rubbing it to keep it warm. He had diabetes and was in such pain.

The amazing thing was, without hesitation or prompting by my grandma, or the reminder that I cannot stand feet…I went to the end of the bed and cupped his left foot in my hands. I rubbed it with my warm hands as tears began to flow. I could not stop crying. Soon he was calm and his feet were warmed.

I soon realized what the Father was doing through me. He was allowing me to understand the humility of serving. I wept with joy…I was honored to be serving a man who was once unknown to me, but now was my Grandpa.  I believe the true meaning of servanthood was experienced by warming the feet of an 84 year old man.  This from a person who has an aversion to feet!!  aged_feet_sml

I will always remember that moment.

Honored to serve….His example is our example. Not in your own strength beloved, it is a surrender to His strength in you.

IN CHRIST ALONE
