Because I’m Happy!
I really like that song, HAPPY by Pharrell. It makes you feel good just to hear it! My mom has it as her ringtone and says something about it every time her phone rings.
But I wonder if maybe it should be CONTENT? Maybe someone needs to write that song!
Go ahead and chuckle.… It is okay. But I really think I have a point.
My husband and I have had several discussions with family members and each other concerning this contentment thing. What exactly does it mean?
When we were younger and in college we use to think we would be “happy” when we got out of school and got a job. Then once we had jobs, we thought we would be “happy” when we bought a small home. Once the small home was purchased, we thought we might be “happy” with a bigger home. The larger home was purchased and then we thought we would be “happy” with a newer car.
You get the idea. Are we ever really happy?
Paul said in Philippines 4:11-13 “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Folks, Paul wrote this when he was in prison! He knew the basis of his contentment.
To be satisfied in whatever circumstances we find ourselves in is indeed not being “happy” all the time. I am not always “happy” I will admit. But I can find contentment in my relationship and trust with Jesus. He loves me and helps me through all those times when I don’t think I can make it. He helps me see reality when in the midst of my “unhappiness”.
So are you happy?
Or are you content?
It is our choice to make!
And by the way, we are still in that last home…28 years and counting!
