Simple Carpenters and Blueprints

Simple Carpenters and Blueprints….

Although I do question the actual “simplicity” of either a carpenter or a blueprint….I am by no means an expert, not even close. I am simply amazed at what carpenters can do. They can build things that I can only imagine. Sometimes they use a blueprint, sometimes nothing but their vivid imagination and a plan sketched out in their head!

My boys always loved to build with Legos. In fact, one enjoys creating with wood to this day. And another can build websites and designs. I am amazed when they send me pictures of window benches, work cabinets, web site and other such things.

In my humble opinion, it was not just a coincidence that Jesus was a carpenter. I have learned over the years that there is debate whether he was really a stonemason or actually a carpenter. Jewish tradition was always that the Father taught the young sons their trade at 12 years of age. And we also know that most building were made of stone at that time. Either way suggests to me that at the very least Jesus was a “craftsman” of sorts. This scripture (and others) refer to him as a carpenter

“He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.  And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.” Mark 6:1-3

All of that being said, I believe that his trade prepared him for his earthly ministry as well as being “fully God, yet fully man.” I would assume that someone who worked with tools, wood, stone, etc would be in good physical shape. No doubt in my mind this alone helped him in his earthly ministry.

And he created things, he put broken things together. Ah, what a picture of us! How many of us are broken or need rebuilding? Like a blue print, we were created with a purpose…and if you look at a blueprint, there are so many details and fine points.

A blueprint is defined by Webster in this manner: “a photographic print that shows how something (such as a building) will be made or a detailed plan of how to do something.”

God has the blueprint of our lives. While there are things that happen that we do not understand, He knows how we will be made…He knows the plans He has for us….

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:13-15

Did Jesus use a blueprint? Probably not. But he had a plan. And He still does. When we wonder what is going on, or feel we are not hearing the answer to our prayer…He is working…He may just be referring back to his blueprint!!
