Festus and Mose
Alright, I have admitted that we are “Gunsmoke” fans. I have confessed that many nights after the depressing news, we play an episode of the series while eating dinner. Yes, we have crossed over into the “Dinner Tray” land of old.
Last night we got so tickled….
I laughed so hard…
I cried.
Festus, Matt Dillon’s Deputy Marshall is always telling “tall tales” of sorts. He aggravates the far out of Doc. But they love each other like brothers. And as usual, Festus was telling one of his stories.
Festus had escaped some gang by walking through a stream, getting on a cow in that stream and riding him out. In this way his footprints did not lead them out of the stream. Doc was intrigued and asked him “Why in thunder did you do that?” He regretted the question immediately.
Festus went on to explain that one of his grandpappys always told him books from that there Bible. One story told of “Mose been chased by them there fairies. Those mean old fairies were chasing him and old Mose got to a big ole crick and he lifted his arms and that big ole crick just opened up and him and bunches of other folks walked on through like them there waters weren’t ever there!”
Doc was exasperated at this point…”you mean the Pharaohs, that were after Moses and the Red Sea, not a crick!” “That’s what I said Doc” Festus replied.
While not exactly the dialogue, you get the general idea. And I am sure you find the humor in it. But I begin to think how really sad it was…
Some people are like that. They believe what they hear without knowing the facts, or checking them out for themselves. People blame God for all kinds of things, when they don’t even know the things He says in His word!
I don’t know the Bible as well as I wish I did…in fact, there are new things I learn all the time. But friends, we ourselves must go to the WORD ourselves, and not listen to what others say is inside the pages of the Book.
The Father wants to speak to us personally. He wants to know us personally. We cannot know Him if we don’t read His words for us.
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Just say’in.
