Missing the Moments

What are-3

I know children have always had a short attention span. But I must say that I think they are shorter than ever now! And something seems to be missing…..

Which made me wonder what and why?

Televsion, video games, iPads, iPods….well you get the point! We have all these devices, yet little quality time.

Everywhere I go I usually see:

a.) a child playing a game on a phone or other device
b.) a child not playing on a device and screaming

Ok, I may be over exaggerating a bit.  But it makes me wonder how we are really doing with communication these days?

So what’s a mom to do?

I know that grocery shopping is much easier when the child is occupied and you can get in and out……but maybe we are missing some really “teachable” moments?

I know that when you are at a nice restaurant and you have to wait for dinner to be served it is much easier for the kids to be on their phones so they won’t be whining….but are we missing some sweet family moments?

I know that using devices as a part of a reward for good behavior is easy….but what about something that could be done outside and really fun and messy?

I know, I sound like a really old lady. My husband still has a flip phone for heaven’s sake. And I do use all available devices and apps like the best of them. But I wonder what we are missing?

I have heard of some families putting all their cell phones in a basket at the table when eating out and the first one to pick their phone up pays the bill for the entire meal.

No Cell Phones

(except mine to take the picture…ironic, huh?)

We are missing the moments. And I am pointing the finger right at myself. I know that this technology is most likely never going away and that we should embrace it…..but I am not sure if we should let it capture us.

John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Maybe we should try to be present for more of those moments….
