Thanksgiving Activities for Children

There are always plenty of activities for children the week of Thanksgiving. A simple Google search will produce a plethora of choices! So I will add a couple of my own.

Practice Thanksgiving more than the week of the holiday. That is good advice for all of us. Being thankful produces benefits for us that we aren’t totally aware of unless we are not doing it!

1 Chronicles 16:34 “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.”

A simple one we used to do:
1.) Take construction paper and write “THANKSGIVING” down the left side of the paper.
2.) With this acronym, have your child/student list things he/she is thankful for…
3.) Don’t editorialize these choices, let the child decide…it is so neat to see what they come up with. It is also insightful in terms of “materialism” and what parents should maybe be concentrating on in terms of needs/wants.
4.) Thanksgiving is a state of mind. Even when we don’t feel like being thankful, it changes your attitude!
5.) Display the art activity for all to see!

Another simple activity:
1.) Let your children plan a play!
2.) Read books concerning the history of Thanksgiving and allow your little ones choose one part of the story to dramatize.
3.) Depending on your age, and the amount of time you have…let them plan it, retell it…
4.) Costumes optional of course!
5.) Video it for showing on Thanksgiving Day.

My boys made videos time and time again. They are now some of the most precious memories we have and I am trying to record them so each will have copies as adults. The children they have someday might get a kick out of it.

So often as “Moms” we get so involved in all the work we have to do for the holidays. I was as guilty as anyone. But learning to take the time to truly understand what the holiday meant is a lesson that lasts a lifetime!

Thanksgiving, indeed a state of mind!
