There is something to be said about it.

I know as a young mother of two active boys I would often crave that quiet. If they weren’t talking, the television was or the Nintendo was on or music was blaring. We had to carve out time for quiet.

And I would sometimes escape to the bath tub and try and lock the door. But with only one bathroom, locking the door was prohibited. So “quiet” wasn’t easy to come by….

But once in a while, I would have the boys turn everything off and just listen. We didn’t try to do it too long. But sometimes after a Bible study we would just sit. Learning to listen is sometimes a hard thing to do.

I am not saying that every time we had our “quiet” time that we all heard something special from the Lord. But I will say that it did teach us a bit about listening.

This world really doesn’t allow us to be quiet. We always have a phone to our ear, earbuds coming out of an iPod, a television program on, or some kind of background noise. And it does get in the way of listening.

It goes along with my earlier post about prayer. We have to teach ourselves and our children how to listen. We can always “hear”, but we are not always “listening.”

And now, as we sit with our “empty nest” the opportunity for quiet is pretty much available all the time. It might sound sad, but it is most certainly that season. And a season that I have gotten use to…and that I am grateful for.

There is something to be said about it.

I know how to listen now.

Ecclesiastes 3:1,7  “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens……a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak

I love Jesus. If I say nothing else, that is enough. But for those curiosity seekers, I am a 56 year old former special education teacher, current part time CCM Radio Announcer who is married to her high school sweetheart. We have been together for 40 years, married 37 of those years! We have raised two sons, who are now married, have jobs and mortgages. We have our furry son, a West Highland Terrier. It wasn't always easy, and I like sharing some insights from those "mommy" and "teaching" years. I also want to encourage people in their daily life. I believe that the Father speaks to us all the time, sometimes I have been too busy to listen. Even during times of trials and troubles, He is ever present. ~Be Encouraged Today~
