Gunsmoke and Redemption?
My husband and I love to watch old episodes of Gunsmoke when we eat dinner. Yep, we are getting old enough that we eat our dinner in front of the television. This empty nest has caused us to do all kinds of crazy things!!
It is just plain ‘ole good T.V. Marshall Dillon had such a kind heart and wanted to give everyone a fair shake. I still wish he and Kitty had gotten together before the end of the show, but that is another blog.
This particular episode starred Claude Akins as an old “gunfighter” who had led a gang. A member of his gang had literally “shot him in the back” and he wanted revenge. It took a year for him to heal, then four years to find the man.
Of course he stumbled upon a “widow woman” with two children. He kept a wild dog from hurting the children and he and the lady became friends. He was honest about his past. Soon she realized that she had not opened herself up to love because of her fears and her past.
Claude found the man and was almost ready to kill him when he changed his mind. Something the lady had said…to the affect of not letting one’s past dictate your future. He heard turn to leave the man and you guessed it…he shot him in the back again. Claude had no choice in self defense but to shoot the man.
He went back to the lady and children injured and she said she would hide him. He knew his past would convict him and no one would believe his story. Marshall Dillon showed up and the lady asked if she could talk to him first..he turned himself in and was freed because of self defense. Marshall Dillon believed him. He rode out to tell her he might be back in six months to be her hired hand. He was a changed man.
See what I mean? Redemption. We cannot let our past mistakes dictate our future actions. Once we come to that realization, then we will have victory!
1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Even the wild dog got a chance to change his past….and he did!
Remember Marshall Dillon would believe you.
